The weird logic of sports

This post is mainly about some really interesting tactical and technical takeaways from game 7 in the Finnish F-Liiga final series between Oilers and Classic.

But before I get there, let me quickly set the scene for those of you who have not seen what I published after game 6.

Game 6 was a game where the numbers pointed at Oilers being the team giving themselves the best chance of winning, but Classic overperformed compared to expected goals numbers in very important situations, coming away with a big win, despite being down to only around 35% expected goals share and having half the number of shot attempts compared to Oilers.
